Hunchback Listening Session (at CEA on 5/14)
Hunchback Listening Session (at CEA on 5/14)
Date + Time: Wednesday, May 14th from 7:30-9:30 pm
Location: Center for the Enlightenment Arts, 305 Ten Eyck St, Brooklyn, NY 11206
About the Event:
Join Open Book Club for an listening session.
This is our first listening session, so please read through the whole description!
I booked out Center of the Enlightenments Arts, an immersive technology and art gallery space. The space has three giant projector walls that will display visuals that complement the audiobook. There will be floor seating with blankets and cushions.
I will play the first section of Hunchback at the event. The run time is around an hour. The novel is split into two hour long sections, so you can finish the second section after the event on your own time (it's available on Spotify as an audiobook!)
After the listening session we'll also have time to hang out and discuss the book. I'll also be collecting questions to send to Polly Barton, the translator of Hunchback, who will respond to them on the Open Book Club Substack newsletter!
Your ticket includes:
- A drink (we'll have alcoholic and NA drinks available!)
- A notebook to jot down questions or notes during the listening session
- A chance to ask Polly Barton, the translator of the book, questions
- And time to mix with other members!
P.S. the wine is gifted by Vinat via Rue, a platform that gets brand sponsorships for your events!
About the Book:
A bombshell bestseller in Japan, a defiant, darkly funny debut novel about a young woman in a care home seeking autonomy and the full possibilities of her life.
“A literary phenomenon in Japan, Hunchback is an extraordinary and thrilling debut novel about sex, disability, and power.”—International Booker Prize Judges
“Unforgettable . . . a thriller of the body . . . [a] miracle.”—The New York Times Book Review
Hunchback has shaken Japanese literary culture with its skillful depiction of the physical body and its unrepentant humor. Winner of the prestigious Akutagawa Prize, it’s a feminist story about the dignity of an individual who insists on her right to make choices for herself, no matter the consequences. Formally creative and refreshingly unsentimental, Hunchback depicts the joy, anger, and desires of a woman demanding autonomy in a world that doesn’t always grant it to people like her. Full of wit, bite, and heart, this unforgettable novel reminds us all of the full potential of our lives, regardless of the limitations we experience.
Refunds + Exchanges: I'm not able to offer refunds or exchanges for future meetings. This is a small (1 person!) business and I have to cover costs in advance of the event. Please consider this (and double check your calendar!) before buying a ticket.
Photography: The event may be photographed + filmed. We reserve the right to use photos + videos from the event for marketing purposes. By attending the event you consent to your image being used for these purposes 📸
